Lead Forestry Technician - Overview
Mountain Engineering is seeking a highly motivated and experienced individual to join our team as a Lead Forestry Technician.
As the Lead Forestry Technician, you will play a pivotal role in managing and overseeing forestry operations, including timber cruising, timber harvest data collection, and unit layout.
Your responsibilities will include supervising a team of technicians, coordinating project timelines, and ensuring compliance with environmental regulations and safety standards.
The ideal candidate will have a strong background in forestry or related field, excellent leadership skills, and the ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with team members and stakeholders.
The position is seasonal to account for winter weather conditions impacting operations.
This position is ideal for candidates that aspire to have a career in land management and forestry.
Mountain Engineering can provide a training path for career advancement towards the Registered Professional Forester Certification.
This position will work with federal, state, and private landowners to conduct a wide variety of timber harvest implementation plans, hazard tree mitigation, post-fire restoration, and/or timber inventory.
Position is ideal for students or graduates focusing in Forestry or a forestry related subject.

Duties & Responsibilities
Lead a small team of Forestry Technicians
Audit and provide feedback to direct reports
Work independently, while maintaining clear communication and oversight of direct reports
Flagging and marking unit boundaries
Flagging stream zones
Timber marking
Timber cruising
Stand Exams
Mapping
Recording GIS/GPS data
Travel on uneven terrain with 4x4 vehicles
Data Collection in relation to diverse surveys
Identification of hazard trees
Vegetation Assessment surveys
Emergency debris management (vegetation assessments post events)
Other duties may be assigned as needed
Knowledge, Skills & Qualifications
CLEAN DRIVING RECORD REQUIRED
Must pass a company administered basic driving test
Must pass a pre-employment substance screening exam
Use of GPS and Handheld Data Collection Devices
Tree biology & identification
Timber harvest or CA Forest Practice Rules
Working knowledge of Word, Excel & Outlook
Must be willing to travel throughout the State of California with potential travel to Oregon and Nevada (company paid travel at set per diem rates)
Can navigate in rural and metropolitan areas.
Must have a basic understanding of topography and read topographic maps
Navigation with a compass
Excellent attention to data requirements and technical detail
Must have sufficient eyesight to judge distances and coordination to get and use theappropriate equipment and tools
Must be able to hike three miles of uneven terrain with approximately twenty pounds in one hour
Self-motivated and positive attitude
Current enrollment or acceptance in a Forestry or Forestry related field
Working Conditions
Works in all temperatures and weather and will be exposed to nature, i.
e.
, irritating plants andbiting or stinging insects, dust, etc.
Works on uneven terrain
Must be willing and able to work in all outdoor weather conditions all year round
Must be willing and able to work 10-hour days for 40 hours or more per week when requested
Willing to travel overnight and share accommodations
Must be willing to work as part of a team
Working Locations
Head quartered in Folsom, CA
Work will be on Plumas National Forest near Quincy, CA.
