JOB SUMMARY The Gerlach Waste Streams Manager is responsible for the effective collection, management and ecological diversion of the waste stream resulting from the operations of the Burning Man Project (BMP) in the town of Gerlach, the 360, Fly Ranch, Black Rock Station (The Ranch), Dog Ranch and other BMP properties as may be necessary.
This position will oversee the execution of the Nevada Operations (NVO) Ecological Waste Diversion Plan.
This involves managing personnel, resources, schedules & safety.
This position will collaborate with the TSA Waste Streams Sustainability Manager to provide seamless oversight of the waste stream during the Burning Man Event (The Event) operations cycle from three weeks pre-event in Gerlach before the move to the Playa through three weeks post-event after the move back to Gerlach.
This is a temporary, full-time, Exempt role, based in Gerlach, NV running from May to October, 2024.

DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Staff Management (20%) Work with the relevant Northern Nevada Property Managers and the Waste Streams Sustainability Manager to provide adequate staffing levels needed for successful operations.
Create and manage daily operational schedules and staffing schedules for the crew to maintain orderly sorting, storage and transport of waste streams at the Northern Nevada Properties.
Ensure communications are prompt and professional and that discretion is maintained as needed.
Take responsibility for the wellbeing of the crew, share techniques and best practices whenever possible.
Mentor staff to nurture their growth and ensure their success in creating a smooth experience for their team and themselves.
Respond to personnel-related matters, including but not limited to conflict resolution, workers comp claims, payroll tracking, and human resources inquiries.
Demonstrate leadership through transparent decision making, clear communication, and by exercising integrity in every interaction.
Monitor the well-being of staff, setting manageable work expectations.
Monitor personal well-being, be aware of work expectations, and proactively address any concerns with your manager.
Foster a team culture that serves to improve staff retention.
Site Management (20%) Work with the relevant Northern Nevada Property Managers and the Waste Streams Sustainability Manager to provide the logistics needed for successful operations.
Connect with stakeholders to deploy the recycling collection stations in Gerlach and at all BMP Nevada Properties as defined in the NVO Ecological Waste Diversion Plan.
Establish and oversee the maintenance of clean and safe work sites; ensure that all crew members are familiar with and able to exercise best practices; ensure that all crew members are provided with the necessary OSHA approved personal protective equipment (PPE).
Coordinate with stakeholders to set up extra collection stations for special events.
Coordinate with the TSA Waste Streams Sustainability Manager for dumpster deliveries and placement in Gerlach.
Coordinate with the Ranch Manager to design, set up and maintain the base of operations for cardboard baling and storage at Black Rock Station.
Oversee the training of crew members in the proper operation of the cardboard baler and storage of the bales.
Collections Operations (20%) Work with the Gerlach Waste Stream Crew to execute the NVO Ecological Waste Diversion Plan.
Monitor recycling collection stations for contamination.
Sort and service recycling collection stations as needed.
Transport all collected materials to the NVO Transfer Station (the dumpsters) in Gerlach.
Transport all cardboard to the Ranch to be baled.
Coordinate with the TSA Waste Streams Sustainability Manager for dumpster servicing and removal of cardboard bales.
Standard Operations and Procedures (20%) Assist the Northern Nevada Property Managers and the NVO OFF Manager in the creation of the NV Ops Ecological Waste Diversion Plan.
Creating the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
Creating the job descriptions for the NV Ops Sustainability Team.
Creating policies for NV Ops sustainability.
Asset Management (10%) Coordinate with the relevant Northern Nevada Properties Managers and the Waste Stream Sustainability Manager to manage all assigned and owned assets used by the NVO Ecological Waste Diversion Team.
Oversee procurement, maintenance and/or storage of all NVO assets.
Maintain clean and organized storage of all Ecological Waste Diversion Team assets stored in Gerlach.
Maintain the inventory of all NVO assets stored in Gerlach.
Ensure proper use and maintenance of all Ecological Waste Diversion Team assets, report any problems or issues in a timely manner.
Ensure proper use and maintenance of all Fleet vehicles assigned to the Ecological Waste Diversion Team, report any problems or issues in a timely manner.
Outreach (5%) Communicate and connect with Community, Burner and Gerlach, to share best practices and knowledge to make the NVO Ecological Waste Diversion Plan a success.
Coordinate with the Waste Streams Sustainability Manager to update and provide the most current TSA sorting guidelines to all collection locations.
Oversee the documentation of processes, collect photo and video content for educational, training and Communications purposes.
Other Functions and Responsibilities (5%) Perform other duties as assigned.
LEARNING AND TEACHING Documentation - Drives the creation, publishing, and maintenance of process documentation related to assigned duties.

Teaches live or e-learning classes, as requested.

Training development - Collaborates with the education team to develop training materials in their area of expertise, as requested.
Learning – Pursues ongoing learning in their area of expertise, working to stay current on emergent knowledge, skills, and processes.
Participates in conferences, forums, and networking events, where appropriate.
Speaking – Represents Burning Man as a subject matter expert and culture-bearer, as requested.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED Ability to move to Gerlach, Nevada.
Knowledge of Burning Man values, ethos, and 10 Principles; especially Leaving No Trace Be familiar and act in accordance with Burning Man’s staff policies and abide by the rules and codes of conduct as described in the Staff Handbook.
A professional demeanor in verbal and written communications with strong communication, interpersonal, and teaching skills.
Able to follow direction and respectfully interface with collaborators .
Effective at task switching, with good time-management skills, able to evaluate and reprioritize workload as necessary.
Situationally aware and safety-minded, able to work long hours in extreme conditions.
Ability to think quickly, problem solve, apply critical thinking to situations, and remain calm under pressure.
Proven leadership skills, a team player who leads by example.
Well organized and detail-oriented.
3+ years in waste stream sorting or similar, preferably with a strong knowledge of Resource Recovery Management (Recycling).
Working knowledge of Google products (Gmail, Groups, Docs, Sheets, Drive).
Experienced and comfortable with using 2-way radio.

Reliable, fulfills obligations.
PREFERRED It is helpful if the candidate has previously worked for Burning Man’s DPW TSA Crew and/or is familiar with its operation and methods.
It is helpful if the candidate has previously been to Burning Man and/or is familiar with its culture.
It is helpful if the candidate has 3+ years leadership experience in event-based production work, familiarity with Burning Man preferred.
It is helpful if the candidate is practiced in facilitating team meetings and mediation.
It is helpful if the candidate has basic carpentry skills and knowledge of basic tools.

REQUIRED LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS Valid driver’s license and a good driving record.
COMPENSATION: Individual compensation decisions are dependent on a variety of factors, including prior experience and geographical location.
The anticipated pay rate for this position is $1,200 - 1,300 per week.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT Off-playa: This position requires periods of heavy lifting, bending, kneeling, squatting, and climbing.
This position will be physically demanding, and requires individuals with good physical health, and endurance.
Work will include the need to find and meet with department representatives who may not be in the vicinity therefore this could include walking or using some form of transportation.
Much of the work will be in outside weather conditions and will be exposed to fumes or airborne particles as well as possible extremes in temperature.
