*Job Description and Duties*
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW), Northern Region is seeking motivated candidates for a Limited Term Senior Environmental Scientist (Specialist) position in the Northern Region with work in the Northern, North Central, Central Region and others as needed.
This position coordinates with regional and statewide efforts to monitor and manage wolf and wolf packs across the landscape and reduce the conflict to livestock and other human activities.
As part of the North Central Region Wildlife Management Team, the incumbent provides focused coordination and expertise for management and monitoring projects in the Northern Region and other Regions as populations expand co-lead responsible for monitoring and collaborating on collaring and management actions.
The incumbent also provides leadership and coordination for Wildlife Management Program projects that evaluate migration corridors and habitat quality for wildlife species, including deer, elk, mountain lion and bear as necessary to evaluate habitat suitability.
The incumbent will be integrated with a team of unit biologists, Human-Wildlife-conflict biologists, and land management staff, and scientific aides to develop and implement wildlife management and monitoring projects on the landscape and will also provide a key coordination role with Northern Region wildlife conservation staff, headquarters program staff, as well as other wildlife programs statewide.
*This position is a 12 month Limited Term (LT) and may be extended up to 24 months or become permanent.

*Working Conditions*
Must be willing to work long, irregular hours, including early mornings, evenings, and weekends.
Ability to use a computer keyboard in a sitting and/or standing position several hours a day.
Ability to lift heavy items up to 40 lbs.
Will interact with regional and branch staff, and members of the public via e-mail, telephone, and in-person in compliance with COVID-19 prevention practices.
Incumbent must comply with a policy that generally prohibits dogs/pets in the workplace/field/vehicles unless approved through reasonable accommodation.
Ability, and willingness to fly in small aircraft such as fixed-wing and helicopter to count ungulates and other species; hike several miles alone in steep uneven terrain; operate 4-wheel drive (4WD) and all-terrain vehicles (ATV) several hours a day.
Must feel comfortable with potential close contact with imperiled and/or confined wild animals.
Must be able to qualify to use a firearm (e.
g.
, for chemical immobilization of wildlife, as needed).
Must complete mandatory wildlife capture training and firearms training within 6 months of hire.
Possess a valid Driver’s License and ability to safely operate a vehicle on public roads.
Attend meetings and hearings, work with staff statewide to complete work assignments.
Occasional travel will be required.
Staff must wear a CDFW approved uniform while conducting field work.
Special Equipment: Daily = 4WD vehicle and computer; Often = ATV, GPS, animal restraint, GIS, telemetry; Ability to use firearm.
